New wine during this busy harvest season was celebrated at a fete this weekend in Alsace. The wine tasted like fruit juice, slightly effervescent and delicious. We sat under big trees in a village park to drink it as a jolly accordionist played drinking songs! Germans and the French ate Tarte flambé and sauerkraut with sausages. There were also lots of desserts, but mostly lots of wine.
The Alsace is abuzz with activity. Small tractors are holding up traffic on the country roads and the small villages as they move grapes from vineyards to the, literally, hundreds of wine makers in the area. Whole families are in the vineyards picking grapes and each day that we are here the leaves on the grape vines are getting more gold, the weather a little crisper.
