We hope that this season finds you and your family well and prosperous. For us, 2016 has been another great year of family, travel, hobbies and just plain fun. After celebrating the New Year with the machatunims, Yiddish for in-laws (Bill and Jan Van der Mei), we started packing for Asheville, NC, Nashville, TN and the John C. Campbell Art and Craft School in NC with our good friends the Flemings. We hoped to take advantage of the John C. Campbell School programs, see the Christmas decorations at the Biltmore in Asheville, see Nashville and last, but not least to visit and travel with the Flemings. A great time was had at each place and Dan and Barry learned woodturning, while Denise learned to make silver jewelry and Nancy Fleming wove a scarf.
It seemed that no sooner than we got back we found ourselves packing again for a May Alaskan cruise with Heather, Justin, Novella and Banyan. We took ten-day cruise out of San Francisco to Skagway, Juneau, the College Glaciers, and Ketchikan. There was hiking, sight seeing, axe throws, harbor cruising, and glaciers calving. Everyone had a great time.
Denise continues to enjoy grandkid time, planning outings, doing artwork, felting, and making cookies. She is still doing her travel blog and trying to keep up with all of our traveling around the world sorting through hundreds of pictures, making videos and writing travel stories. (ddhogan.com) She continues meeting with her Baking Group, going to yoga, and playing pickle ball. We both found time to meet with a new Book Club, which has been fun.
Barry is still busy with his Rotary Club even though his year as president ended in July doing the weekly newsletter and being club secretary. He continues as newsletter editor for his MG club and as the editor for the local community association monthly newsletter, of which he is a Board member, Grants Chair and Secretary. He has continued woodturning, making bowls, bottle stoppers, and wood handles for everything. Barry also tinkers with his 1973 MGBGT and says it is almost done, although it is not running at the moment.
In May we found time to spend a week in Denver, Golden and Boulder, Colorado with Jon and Kathryn. We saw a Shaky Graves and The Devil Makes Three concert at the Red Rocks outside venue, had a great time and nearly froze since it was so cold. We also Brew Cruised, tasting selected craft beer and were surprised that we could find the car when it was all over.
By the time July came around we were off again to Europe, specifically Copenhagen in advance of the Baltic Cruise that we would take with Jon and Kathryn. We toured Copenhagen, Oslo, Berlin, Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, and Stockholm with them. We saw and did so much that you’ll need to read the travel blog to get it all. After the cruise, Jon and Kathryn flew back to San Diego and we were off to Edinburgh, then by train from Oslo to Bergen for some more Scandinavian time.
We are looking forward to the New Year when we will be traveling to Australia. This will be our longest trip ever. We leave in January and will be back in April. Lots of cruising and lots of land time too!
We hope that you will have a wonderful and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and that you enjoyed 2016 as much as we did. We look forward to the future with more fun, family and travel.
